Nigerian journalists have been advised to be objective and unbiased in carrying out their reportage duties.
Giving this advice was the Minister for Power, Works and Housing, Mr. Babatunde Raji Fashola (SAN), while receiving the executive members of the Nigerian Union of Journalists, Oyo State Council, who paid him a courtesy visit, in his office in Abuja.
In a statement made available to The DEFENDER on Wednesday, the Minister admonished the Nigerian media on the need to do through investigation regarding the sources of their information and balance the stories before publication.
This way, Mr. Fashola noted, would enable the press dish out right news to the public.
The Minister noted that this administration under President Muhammadu Buhari, is leaving no stone unturned in working towards making life easier for Nigerians in the face of the current economic meltdown.
While the media were encourage to their play their own role in the business of nation building, diligently, Mr. Fashola told the media practitioners that the Federal Government was committed to securing lives and properties, fighting against corruption and improving the nation’s economy.
He told his visitors that the decision of government to reposition the economy through infrastructural development had begun to yield positive result.
“The contractors on many of the federal roads across the country are back to construction sites engaging host communities by creating employment to Nigerians and generating wealth.
“This has improved economic status of most Nigerians along such road alignment,” Fashola.
In his address, Comrade Adewumi, Chairman of the NUJ, Oyo State Council, expressed his council’s appreciation to the Minister and the Ministry’s officials for their unalloyed commitment in ensuring that the interest of Nigerians were protected, adding that the council had been monitoring the performance of the Ministry under the leadership of Fashola and that it was satisfied.
Faniran promised the Minister of the council’s readiness to make itself available for any media assistance whenever the case arose.
The council also seized the occasion to announce its 50th anniversary and also informed the Mr. Fashola of his role as guest speaker at the occasion where he would be decorated as the Man of the Year.
