Shame on peddlers of lies, Grand Mufti reacts after abducted principal spoke from captivity

“There is undoubtedly a security crisis, but shame on those peddling lies and misinformation to inflame religious sentiments,” the Grand Mufti said.

The Grand Mufti of Yorubaland, Sheikh Daood Imran Molaasan, has condemned what he described as the deliberate spread of misinformation surrounding the abduction of Mrs. Rachael Alamu, a school principal, and her students, who remain in captivity.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, Sheikh Molaasan dismissed reports linking the kidnapping to alleged religious demands, describing such claims as unverified and irresponsible. He accused certain individuals of exploiting the tragic incident to stir division and heighten religious tension in Yorubaland and across Nigeria.

“There is undoubtedly a security crisis, but shame on those peddling lies and misinformation to inflame religious sentiments,” the Grand Mufti said. “At a time when families are suffering and victims remain in captivity, the focus should be on securing their freedom rather than advancing divisive narratives.”

His reaction follows an emotional appeal reportedly made by Mrs. Alamu from captivity, in which she called for urgent intervention to secure her release and that of the other victims.

Sheikh Molaasan expressed sympathy for Mrs. Alamu, her family, and others affected by the kidnapping, offering prayers for their safety and swift release.

He also urged members of the public, media practitioners, and social media users to exercise caution and rely on verified information when discussing sensitive security matters. According to him, the spread of unsubstantiated claims could further deepen existing social and religious fault lines.

The statement was released by Mufti Media.
