Anti-Corruption War: Yakubu sues EFCC over forfeiture of seized $9.8m

A former Group Managing Director of the National Nigerian Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), Mr. Andrew Yakubu, has sued the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) over forfeiture order on the $9.8m and 74,000 Pounds Sterling recently recovered from his residence in Kaduna by the anti-graft agency.

It would be recalled that Justice Zainab Bage Abubakar of the Federal High Court in Kano last week, while ruling on an ex-parte application filed before it by the EFCC, ordered that the money be forfeited to the federal government.

Yakubu was taken before Justice Zainab by the commission after the recovery.

However, Mr. Yakubu has also gone to another Federal High Court at Court Road, Kano, to seek redress on the forfeiture order.

His counsel, Mr. Ahmed Raji, who spoke through Barrister Abdulkarim Kabiru Maude yesterday, said his client had applied for a motion on notice asking the court to vacate the order. The EFCC’s spokesman at the Kano Zonal office, Idris Nadabo, while confirming the development, said the case would come up on  March 7.
