Sultan of Sokoto, Tinubu, Governors, Deji of Akure, others attend Eid Al-Adha prayers 1447AH

The Sultan along with top members of his Sultanate Council prayed along with Governor of Sokoto State, His Excellency Dr. Ahmed Aliyu, and top government finctionaries during the prayers.

Muslim faithful across Nigeria on Wednesday May 27, 2026 joined millions of worshippers around the world to celebrate the 1447AH Eid Al-Adha, with prominent leaders including the Sultan of Sokoto and President-General of the Nigeria Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA), His Eminence Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, state governors, traditional rulers, and other dignitaries participating in special prayer sessions held in different parts of the country.

The Eid Al-Adha celebration, also known as the Festival of Animal Sacrifice, commemorates the obedience and unwavering faith of Prophet Ibrahim peace be upon him, who was willing to sacrifice his son in obedience to the command of Almighty Allah.

Leading the celebrations in northern Nigeria, the Sultan of Sokoto and Leader of over 120 million Muslims of Nigeria, Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, joined thousands of Muslim faithful at the Central Eid prayer ground in the Sokoto City, after which he called on Nigerians to continue praying for peace, unity, and stability in the country.

The Sultan along with top members of his Sultanate Council prayed along with Governor of Sokoto State, His Excellency Dr. Ahmed Aliyu, and top government finctionaries during the prayers.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu also observed the Eid prayers alongside Muslim worshippers at the Obalende Eid praying ground led by the Chief Imam of Lagos, Sheikh (Engr.) Sulaimon Abou Nola, and urged Nigerians to embrace sacrifice, tolerance, and love for one another in the spirit of the season. The President emphasized the need for unity and collective responsibility towards national development.

Across various states, governors participated in the Eid prayers and used the occasion to call for peaceful coexistence, religious harmony, and renewed commitment to nation-building.

In Ondo State, the Deji and Paramount Ruler of Akure Kingdom, His Royal Majesty, Oba (Dr.) Aladetoyinbo Ogunlade Aladelusi, Odundun II, joined Muslim faithful in Akure to observe the Eid Al-Adha prayers at the Muslim praying ground along Oda Road, Akure.

The revered monarch’s presence at the prayer ground drew commendations from worshippers and community leaders, who described the gesture as a reflection of the longstanding peaceful relationship among different religious groups in Akure Kingdom.

The Eid prayer session in Akure was led by Islamic cleric and Grand Chief Imam of Akure Kingdom Sheikh AbdulHakeem Akorede, who charged Muslims to uphold the virtues of obedience, sacrifice, humility, and compassion as demonstrated by Prophet Ibrahim peace be upon him.

Osolo of Isolo in the Akure South Local Government Area of Ondo State, His Royal Majesty Oba Edward Kolawole Adewole, also joined Muslims in his autonomous community to celebrate the Sallah during which he called for Muslims to replicate the sacrifice of Prophet Ibrahim and lessons of the sacrifice in ensuring a better Nigeria.

Special prayers were also generally offered for the peace, progress, and economic stability of Nigeria, as clerics urged citizens and political leaders to work together for national unity and development.

The celebration witnessed large gatherings of worshippers adorned in colorful traditional attires, while security agencies maintained surveillance around major prayer grounds to ensure peaceful observance of the festival.

Eid Al-Adha remains one of the most significant festivals in Islam and is celebrated annually by Muslims worldwide through prayers, charity, and the sharing of sacrificial meals with family members, neighbours, and the less privileged.
