Sheikh Gummi reacts to ‘Islamaphobia’ in Yoruba Land, says, “Nobody can stop me from going anywhere in Nigeria”

“Why would Yoruba people not think about their own people living in the North when they do all these unpatriotic things? Now, I agree with Sheikh Gummi that nobody can stop him from visiting anywhere in Nigeria and let me tell you that Alhaji Ahmad Gulak’s assassination will be the last of any Northern figure that will be tolerated from any Southern part of this country.
Renowned Islamic cleric and Nigerian medical doctor, Sheikh Ahmad Gummi, has spoken on controversy going the round in the Yoruba Land of South West Nigeria over his visitation to Ibadan late last year but has now, seven months after, been portrayed as his trying to Islamise Oyo State with some Northern ideologies and tenets,” said Bulama Ibrahim 

The retired Army officer, who like many other Muslim leaders believes it is impossible for anyone to Islamise or Christian use any part of Nigeria, stressed that nobody can stop him from visiting anywhere in the country, while maintaining that he was not invited by any Muslim group or individual in the South West.

In a post on his Facebook page on Tuesday June 9, 2026, he said he was in Ibadan as a representative of northern Islamic scholars.

He made this known barely a day after one of the victims of the abduction in the Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State dismissed claims that their abductors demanded the implementation of Shari’ah law in the state as part of the conditions for releasing the victims.

The principal of Community High School, Esiele, Oyo State, Mrs Rachael Alamu, while speaking from captivity in a now-viral video, said the gunmen said they never demanded the introduction of Shari’ah law or a N1 billion ransom as reported in some quarters, but rather for the release of their associates currently in the custody of Nigerian authorities.

Also, the Muslim Rights Concern rejected the alleged demand for Shari’ah in a statement issued on Monday June 8, describing the report as “a lie from the pit of Jahannam (hell)”.

MURIC argued that the so-called demand was inserted by enemies of Islam in the negotiation team to tarnish the image of Islam.

However, aligning with the Islamic group’s position, Sheikh Gummi wrote that, “I quite understand now how Islamophobia is shaping politics in SW (South West) and why I was unnecessarily dragged into their dirty local politics.

“I was in Ibadan, not by the invitation of any SW Muslim individual or group, but as a representative of the Coalition of Northern Muslim Ulama.

“Can anybody stop me from going anywhere in Nigeria?”

Recall that Gummi visited Ibadan on Wednesday, November 19, 2025, where he served as a special guest and speaker at the Southern Nigerian Ulama Summit.

The event took place at the University of Ibadan.

During his visit, he also attended a courtesy session alongside other prominent Southern and Northern Muslim scholars.

In the meantime, a call has gone to all anti-Islam elements in South West Nigeria to refrain from Islamaphobia activities so for Yoruba race not to be given a global tag as archenemy of Islam and Muslims in Africa’s most important country. This was said as the caller warned that it will be a scenario they cannot be able to control, if Muslims are provoked into religious war the way some Yoruba people are doing – wrongly and mischievously profiling Muslims and Northerners as criminals, terrorists and kidnappers of their people in the South West government with national Constitution by governments, kings and chiefs.

According to a concerned Nigerian simply named Bulama Ibrahim, who made the call while taking part in the conversation, “It is sad that some Yoruba people are the ones who know Sheikh Ahmed Gummi as “terrorist” although they cannot prove it. How come that anything that is connected to hatred for Northern people in Nigeria is Yoruba? And you have some politicians trying to wash themselves clean of being identified when linked with the visit of Sheikh Gummi to Ibadan. One of these politicians is a Muslim.

“There is no true Muslim who will run away from another Muslim like they do being identified with Sheikh Gummi simply because some fellow Yoruba people are spreading falsehoods about him. Until today, they have not told us what Gummi’s crimes are except the figment of their own imagination that they carry around. Niger Delta militants destroy our nation’s economic cash cow and who started kidnapping and unconventional bombing in Nigeria once chose Professor Wole Soyinka as their face in negotiation.

“Whether he accepted or not, if he were to be a Northerner, Yoruba’s anti-Islam and anti-North elements would have sung the same negative mantra they are singing to Sheikh Gummi against him. Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has told them useful Gummi’s role made his government to understand the terrorists but they are now leaving Obasanjo because he is Yoruba but pouncing on Gummi. This is how they took Nigeria to where we are.

“They want all Northerners and Muslims to be evicted from Yoruba Land of South West and we have a federal government of Nigeria and governments of Yoruba states who should speak to condemn this but who have continued to keep silent on it. This was how IPOB terrorism grew in the South East when all elected and traditional leaders of the region either failed to condemn and stop their terrorism hidden behind secessionist agitation until they started killing security personnel and Northerners in their land.

“Those haters of Islam, Muslims and Northerners in Yoruba Land should know that this is not the character we know about their tribe and that is not what they project to us about themselves.

“They told us that Yoruba Land is the most tolerant tribe talking about religious practice; his true has their attitude always shown that to be the way they hate to see female Muslim wearing hijab in schools, in employment and even enjoying what should be theirs in public benefits in the region?

“They claim to be the most accommodating tribe in terms of living peacefully with people of other tribes; how true is that with the way they issue provocations and make unguarded utterances describing those non-indigenous people doing business in their land?

“Why would Yoruba people not think about their own people living in the North when they do all these unpatriotic things? Now, I agree with Sheikh Gummi that nobody can stop him from visiting anywhere in Nigeria and let me tell you that Alhaji Ahmad Gulak’s assassination will be the last of any Northern figure that will be tolerated from any Southern part of this country.

“President Bola Ahmed Tinubu-led Federal Government should caution his people over this attitude before they create another Civil war in Nigeria,” he warned.
