*INEC to hold supplementary election in Ihiala

The Anambra State electorate have proved themselves as the most focused in the South East as, despite threats and activities of insecurity agents in the build up to the process, they refused to be deprived of the civic right to exercise their franchise at the just concluded governorship election in the state.
This was as candidate of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), Prof. Charles Soludo, continued to maintain the lead that he opened earlier as results of the election trickled in on Sunday.

APGA is believed to be the legacy of late Chief Emeka Odumegwu Ojukwu as regional political party for the South East of Nigeria. Although he did not make it to the presidency, Ojukwu produced two governors thus taking two of the five South East states from Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in 2007 under President Umar Musa Yar’Adua’s government and maintained the feat till death.

That continued until Rochas Okorocha, one of the Ojukwu legacy beneficiaries, changed the tide in the build up to 2015 elections, when he took a faction of APGA to All Progressives Congress (APC) leaving Anambra as the only defending champion of the legacy.

The Anambra people’s commitment to commonsensical politics has been confirmed in their resilience, despite the scary defections of many big guns in the state’s politics switching allegiance from APGA to APC, when they resolutely insisted by their votes made possible by President Muhammadu Buhari’s ‘One Man One Vote’ policy that has made vote count across the country since his coming to power, it was gathered.

Soludo, a former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), won 18 of the 20 Local Government Areas for which results were declared by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

Elections were not held in Ihiala Local Government Area and a supplementary election has been scheduled to take place on Tuesday, November 9.

Other top contenders in the election are Senator Andy Uba of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Mr Valentine Ozigbo of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), and Senator Ifeanyi Ubah of the Young Progressive Party (YPP).

The results from the 20 LGAs showed that Soludo polled a total of 103,946 votes, more than twice that of his closest opponent, PDP’s Valentine Ozigbo who got 51,322 votes.

APC’s Andy Uba secured the third-highest votes – 42,942, while YPP’s Ifeanyi Ubah got 20,917.
