January 23 is World Betrayal Day — Kwankwaso

One of them said, “These APC people used all their Federal Might including soldiers, police, INEC and courts to rob you of your 2023 election victory. We all saw how the Court of Appeal contradicted himself in attempt to snatch your victory until, due to clear position and resistance of the people of Kano, Islamic leaders across Northern Nigeria including the late Sheikh Dahiru Bauchi and unhindered commitment of some selected media friends in the country, the Supreme Court of Nigeria your election victory be. Now those you defeated along with all their Federal Might, you have taken the mandate to them as a gift. So said!” He exclaimed.

Former Governor of Kano State, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has declared January 23 as “World Betrayal Day”.

Kwankwaso, who is the leader of the Kwankasiyya Movement stated this during his address to his loyalists at his Miller Road residence in Kano, made reference to the day.

He explained that the idea of adopting the day was derived from social media commentators who described the governor’s NNPP exit as an act of betrayal.

To many Nigerians within and outside Kano, it is unthinkable how former Governor Abdullahi Ganduje, who is undergoing trial for alleged corruption cases under Governor Yusuf, could convince him to pull out of the NNPP betraying the Kwankwasiyyah and people of Kano the way he did.

One of the said, “These APC people used all their Federal Might including soldiers, police, INEC and courts to rob you of your 2023 election victory.

The former Defence Minister’s remarks were in reaction to Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf’s resignation from the NNPP, on January 23, 2026.

Baring last minute changes, Governor Yusuf is set to join the All Progressives Congress (APC), as the party in the state has announced the reservation of its card number 001 for him.

Kwankwaso said “none caught my attention more than one who posted, suggesting that we declare January 23 annually as World Betrayal Day.

“Therefore, as the leader and grand patron of this movement, I hereby declare that I fully support the declaration,” he said.

He said the day would henceforth be marked with special events to remind members of what transpired.

Kwankwaso said his followers celebrated the move as a strategic alignment with the Federal Government, adding that loyalists described it as a betrayal that has heightened political uncertainty in the state.

Former Senator Abubakar Gada, on Saturday declared that he’s returning to his old party the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP )ahead of the 2027 general election.

Gada told his supporters in Sokoto that decision was based on the need to “reclaim and rebuild” the PDP in the state after what he described as leadership stagnation under former governor Aminu Waziri Tambuwal.

He said Tambuwal has failed to identify fully with the African Democratic Congress (ADC) six months after both politicians signalled interest in the party.

According to Gada, who represented Sokoto East Senatorial District between 2007 and 2011 under the PDP and joined the ADC in 2025, he and Tambuwal were initially considered joint leaders of the party in Sokoto, but insisted that leadership “comes with responsibility.

“My humble self and Senator Aminu Waziri Tambuwal were considered the leaders to drive the party in the state,” Gada said.

“But leadership means identifying with the people, showing commitment and taking responsibility. For six months, we raised the hope and tempo of the party, but he refused to come and sit down with us to build it.”

He said Tambuwal’s nonparticipation in ADC activities fuelled doubts about his political intentions.

“You cannot be talking to APC on one hand, being promoted as vice presidential option for Peter Obi on the other hand and still refuse to register or allow your followership to register in ADC.

“This level of contradiction is not partnership for progress.”

Gada said the situation has left the ADC “in limbo” in Sokoto and forced him to “take destiny into our hands by returning to PDP.”
