IBEJU-LEKKI: The Kara market crisis and a traders’ plea for help

By ADEWALE OMO OLUBO, Lagos
In a compelling plea for assistance, the market women and men of Kara in the Ibeju-Lekki area of Lagos State have reached out to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, Speaker of Lagos State House of Assembly, Rt Hon Mudashiru Obasa, and other distinguished members of the state government.
These traders, who have built their livelihoods in Kara market over the years, now face an existential threat stemming from a brewing controversy regarding market rights.
The traders assert that they have diligently followed the proper protocol to register Kara market with the Lagos State Ministry of Agriculture, investing a significant sum of N2 million for approval.
Regrettably, they expressed dismay, their determination has been met with stagnation, as they find themselves waiting for an official notification from the ministry. Amid this uncertainty, a notable figure, named Mr. Bayo Balogun, who was said to have previously solicited their support during his campaign for the House of Representatives, has reportedly obtained approval for the market and is now demanding that the traders vacate the premises.
The market community considers the actions of Mr. Bayo, now a Member of the House Representatives in Abuja, as a grave betrayal, emphasizing that he engaged them in good faith without betrayal of his ulterior motives. They underscore the injustice of allowing someone who submitted an application after their own to gain approval while they remain in limbo.
The traders suspect a political agenda behind this maneuver, viewing Mr. Bayo’s actions as driven by ulterior motives rather than community welfare.
In light of these troubling developments, the market women and men are fervently calling on the state government to step in and safeguard their livelihoods. They are imploring Governor Sanwo-Olu’s administration to acknowledge the integral role that Kara market plays in their lives and in the local economy.
The traders assert that it is the government’s duty to uphold their rights and guarantee equitable treatment in this matter.
Kara market serves as more than just a commercial hub; it is a vital source of income for numerous families. The market women and men exhibit a profound passion for their work, expressing unwavering determination to protect their businesses.
They firmly believe that Governor Sanwo-Olu’s administration, known for its responsiveness to citizens’ grievances, will embrace their appeal and take meaningful action.
As these traders await a response from the government, they remain hopeful that their urgent plea will be heard and addressed. They trust that, with governmental support, they can persist in their endeavors, further contributing to the economic vitality of Lagos State.
The market community is looking to the governor and the speaker to employ their leadership and legislative influence in resolving this pressing issue, ensuring that justice is served.
The Kara market crisis is multifaceted, requiring thoughtful deliberation and swift intervention. The market women and men are not only standing up for their livelihoods; they are asserting their rights as constituents of Lagos State.
As the government contemplates the situation, it is crucial to consider the lasting impact this decision will have on many families. The residents of Kara are closely observing the developments, hopeful for a fair and equitable resolution to this crisis.
