We queued for hours to buy fuel for N600 until Buhari came 2015, Lauretta Onochie recalls, as NNPC says deregulation not price increase

By BASHIR ADEFAKA

Digital and Social Media Aide to President Muhammadu Buhari, Lauretta Onochie, has urged Nigerians not to be agitated about the cries of fuel prince increase attached to ending of fuel subsidy regime by the President.

Under previous government, fuel sold for N600 with subsidy being paid.

Referring to quotes by the Group Managing Director of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), Mallam Meke Kyari, she said what her boss had done with the policy was not to increase price of the commodity but simply deregulation whereby government no longer fixes prices for oil marketers.

Kyari, she posted on her Facebook page, said, “There’s no price increase for petrol. Don’t let anyone fool you. It’s deregulation, not price increase.

“It’s all for good. In time, we’ll all be happy to know that deregulation is in the best interest of Nigerians.

“Mr. President always acts in the interests of the ordinary people.”

In her own word Onochie said, “Please dont be agitated. We queued hours to buy petrol for ₦600 a litre, until 2015. It can only get better.”

We gathered that this figure was even as fuel subsidy was still paid running into over a trillion.

The DEFENDER reports that Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) had said on Monday it would no longer cap the price at which fuel is sold in the country in the form of subsidy payment or under-recovery cost.
