Senate confirms Onnoghen as CJN

The Senate Wednesday confirmed the nomination of Justice Walter Onnoghen as the substantive Chief Justice of Nigeria.

The confirmation came after a screening session by the Senate on Wednesday.

Justice Onnoghen maintained that the independence of the judiciary would continue under his watch.

Mr. Onnoghen fielded questions on various subjects, relating to the independence of the judiciary, corruption in the judiciary, establishment of special courts for corruption trial and respect for court rulings, among others.

After answering series of questions put before him by the Senators, Onnoghen left the red chamber.

The Senate President, Bukola Saraki, thereafter, put the question for his approval before the Senate.

The Senate agreed to his confirmation.
