Search for Maj. Gen. Alkali ongoing – Military

The military Tuesday said it would not relent in the ongoing search and rescue operation for the former Chief of Administration at the Nigeria Army Headquarters, Major-General Mohammed Idris Alkali (rtd), who went missing around Plateau State on September 3 while on his way to Bauchi from Abuja.

The retired General, who was travelling in a black Toyota Corola vehicle with registration number MUN 670 AA, was said to have lost contact with relatives around Jos South.

Intelligence report was said to have revealed that his vehicle was suspected to have been dumped in a pond around Lafendeg in Du District where a former governor of the state, Jonah Jang, hails from.

Deputy Director, Army Public Relations at the 3rd Armourd Division of the Nigerian Army, Colonel Kayode Ogunsanya, yesterday told Daily Trust that the operation at Du was ongoing and no discovery had been made since a bus door was recovered on Friday.

On his part, Operation Safe Haven Media and Information Officer Major Adam Umar said: “The pond is large and deep, we don’t know how deep, but the operation is ongoing and we would continue.”

With a combined rescue team of officers and soldiers from 3 Division Quick Response Team, Operation Safe Haven, Nigeria Police Force, Vehicle Inspection Officers, Fire Service as well as local divers, Umar said the local women who earlier protested no longer posed a challenge to the operation.

“We spoke with some of their representatives on that very day and since then, they have not returned,” he stated.
