Protest breaks out in Kano, Nigeria, police station set on fire {SEE WHY}

A resident of Rano, Malam Yusuf Auwalu, said, “It’s a sad day for our community. Abdullahi Musa was not a criminal. He was arrested, and now he is dead. We want justice.”

Information reaching us from Kano, North West Nigeria says there is an eruption of tension in Rano Local Government Area of state on Monday, following the death of a young man, named Abdullahi Musa, from police brutality.

Musa was said to have died during interrogation in the foremost security agency’s custody. He had been accused of a traffic offence, for which he was arrested on Sunday May 25, 2025.

His death in custody sparked outrage among residents, particularly the youth.

What began as a peaceful protest quickly turned violent when demonstrators set the Rano Divisional Police Headquarters ablaze in response to Musa’s death.

According to eyewitness accounts, the situation escalated when police allegedly opened fire on the protesters, injuring two young men.

“We were protesting peacefully. We only wanted answers about what happened to Abdullahi Musa. But they started shooting at us,” said one of the protesters, who spoke on condition of anonymity.

The injured youths, identified as Hassan Salisu Hassan and Muhammad Ibrahim, are currently receiving treatment in an undisclosed hospital, according to residents.

A resident of Rano, Malam Yusuf Auwalu, said, “It’s a sad day for our community. Abdullahi Musa was not a criminal. He was arrested, and now he is dead. We want justice.”

Kano police spokesperson, Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, reportedly confirmed the incident saying that, “An incident occurred in Rano — a thorough investigation will be conducted, by the grace of God.”
