“Same thing is happening in Customs now. I don’t want to believe we will wake up tomorrow and accuse the President of having no capacity to decide Col. Hameed Ali’s successor. When the President gets to the bridge, he always has the wisdom of how to cross it.”

President Muhammadu Buhari has extended the tenure of Inspector General of Police (IGP), Alhaji Muhammad Abubakar Adamu, by three months.

Muhammad Adamu should have left office on February 1 this year but to the prerogatory of the Commander-in-Chief, he will not go yet.

As elected President, full responsibility to arrange the security architecture of the country the best way he so believes in ensuring the constitutional duty of providing security and safety for all rests on the Daura, Katsina State-born Buhari, who is having his second shot at the seat of power as only former military leader after Olusegun Obasanjo to achieve the feat in Nigeria’s post-Independence era.

The nation’s Minister of Police Affairs, Alhaji Maigari Dingyadi, disclosed this while briefing State House correspondents at the Presidential Villa, Abuja on Thursday.

He said Buhari’s decision was to give time for proper selection of the new helmsman for the force, although some critics believe the President and any future leader should always have plans ahead of time for successors including who takes over from him after office.

To the critics’ fair opinions, the President is the elected and should not be distracted as, whether or not, his name bears all brunts for happenings under his administration. They however want him to consider tackling successor related bottlenecks ahead of time to avoid working against against the rules.

But a source in Abuja said, “Mr. President should at least be given the honour of being seen as matured and capable of handling the affairs of country he took oaths to lead, for once.”

He said, “Same thing is happening in Customs now. I don’t want to believe we will wake up tomorrow and accuse the President of having no capacity to decide Col. Hameed Ali’s successor. When the President gets to the bridge, he always has the wisdom of how to cross it.”
