Troops of Operation FANSAN YAMMA foil terrorist infiltration in Zamfara, rescue 9 abducted civilians

Troops of Sector 2, Operation FANSAN YAMMA, have foiled an attempted terrorist infiltration of the Forward Operating Base (FOB) at Kasuwan Daji in Kaura Namoda Local Government Area of Zamfara State, inflicting heavy casualties on the attackers and rescuing nine abducted civilians.
The incident occurred at about 1:40 a.m. on Sunday, August 2, 2026, when the terrorists attempted to exploit the cover of darkness to breach the military facility.
According to a statement issued by the Acting Deputy Director, Army Public Relations, 8 Division, Nigerian Army/Sector 2, Operation FANSAN YAMMA, Lieutenant Colonel Olaniyi Osoba, troops on alert quickly detected the hostile movement and responded with coordinated and overwhelming firepower.
The fierce engagement reportedly forced the terrorists to abandon their mission and retreat in disarray.
Following the initial confrontation, reinforcements arrived, prompting troops to launch a hot pursuit of the fleeing attackers. During the operation, the terrorists were reported to have abducted an unspecified number of residents from surrounding communities.
The sustained military pursuit, however, resulted in the successful rescue of nine abducted civilians, who were safely recovered by the troops.
The Army disclosed that one Army officer and one police officer were killed during the intense firefight.
Two other soldiers sustained gunshot wounds and were immediately evacuated by air for advanced medical treatment. The two injured personnel are said to be in stable condition.
The military said troops have since secured and dominated the area while continuing exploitation operations to determine the full extent of the terrorists’ casualties and ensure the safety of residents in the affected community.
The Army described the failed infiltration as another major operational setback for the terrorists, coming amid intensified military pressure against armed groups operating in the North-West Theatre.
According to the statement, the development underscores the growing difficulty faced by terrorist groups in carrying out coordinated attacks against highly alert and combat-ready troops, with their combat capability, morale and freedom of action increasingly being degraded.
The Army also dismissed reports circulating online that six security personnel were killed in the incident, clarifying that only one Army officer and one police officer paid the supreme price during the attack.
Operation FANSAN YAMMA, the Army reaffirmed, remains committed to sustaining offensive operations, protecting vulnerable communities and dismantling terrorist networks until lasting peace and security are restored across the North-West.
