Peter Rufai was a true Nigerian icon, ADC mourns ex-Super Eagles keeper

The one time Sports Minister of the Federal Republic added that, “On the field, he was not just a player — he was a symbol of pride for an entire nation.”

The African Democratic Congress (ADC), joining millions of Nigerians home and abroad, has mourned the passing of former Super Eagles keeper, Peter Rufai, fondly known as Dodo Mayana.

The Coalition Movement Spokesman of African Democratic Congress (ADC), Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, made the condolences in a statement dated July 4, 2025, described Rufai as a true legend of Nigerian football and one of the finest goalkeepers to ever wear the green and white.

“As a giant of African football, Peter Rufai exemplified the brilliance, courage, and determination of the Nigerian spirit,” said the ADC National Spokesperson, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi.

The one time Sports Minister of the Federal Republic added that, “On the field, he was not just a player — he was a symbol of pride for an entire nation.”

With every save, every kick of the ball, and every opportunity he had to play, Rufai represented Nigeria and the Super Eagles with unmatched passion, skill, and grace, said Abdullahi.

“Today, as we celebrate his remarkable life, we also mourn the passing of a man and a legend whose love for the beautiful game and deep devotion to his country inspired generations,” said the party’s National Publicity Secretary.

“He leaves behind an indelible mark on the history of Nigerian football,” said he.

Bolaji Abdullahi recalled that Peter Rufai was more than an athlete, saying he was a unifier.

“In times when sports provided hope and brought Nigerians together across all divides, he stood as a beacon of excellence and dignity,” the spokesperson added.

The ADC extends its deepest condolences to his family, loved ones, the Nigerian football community, and all who were touched by his legacy.

“May his memory continue to inspire future generations to strive, to serve, and to shine — just as he did,” the party concluded.
