Ogun set up committee to tackle illicit drugs problem

The Ogun Government says it has set up a committee to rid the state of illegal drug dealers and those patronising them following its increasing rate in the state.

Mr Olufemi Fabiola, the Director, Pharmaceutical Services in the state Ministry of Health, made this known to journalists on Tuesday in Abeokuta.

Members of the committee include officials from the Ministries of Health and Justice, National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria (PSN) and the Nigerian Police Force (NPF).

Fabiola described it as alarming, saying that government would no longer tolerate the development in the state.

He said that the committee has the mandate to raid and picket all illegal and counterfeit drug premises, outlets and unwholesome processed food outlets.

The director advised those involved in the running of illegal drug premises to desist forthwith, warning that anyone caught would face the full wrath of the law.

“The state government is worried by the influx of illegal drug dealers from neighbouring states.

“We will not fold our arms for the unscrupulous elements to perpetrate illegal drug deals in the state,” he said.

Fabiola said that the activities of illegal drug dealers were responsible for the increase in the use of hard and illicit drugs among school children, especially in the primary and secondary schools.

He said that the government had established a drug-free club in 22 public secondary schools across the state to curb the menace of drug abuse and drug-related crimes among youths.
