Ogun Police shoots highway robber to death

One robbery suspect has been shot dead by the Police in Ogun State, Ogun State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), ASP Abimbola Oyeyemi says in a statement copy of which was sent to The DEFENDER on Friday.

The incident, according to the police spokesman, occurred on Wednesday May 23 at the Fidiwo area of Lagos-Ibadan Expressway in the state.

The short robber was said to be operating with others of his gang during which, on arrival of men of the police command, they engaged them in a gun duel that brought him down, while others escaped with various degrees of gunshot wound.

The statement said, “Following a distress call received by the Police at Isara Divisional headquarters that hoodlums operating on motorcycle have blocked the expressway dispossessing commuters of their belongings.

“The DPO Isara Division CSP Yussuf Taiwo led his men to the scene.  On sighting the policemen, they opened fire on them while the policemen retaliated.

“At the end of the gun duel, one of the robbers was shot dead while others escaped with various degrees of gunshot wound.

Recovered from him is a cut to size locally made pistol while the two Bajaj motorcycles they used for the operation were also recovered,” it said.

In the meantime, the state’s Commissioner of Police CP Ahmed Iliyasu, has commended the quick response to distress by men of Isara Division even as he also directed that the escaped members of the gang be hunted for and brought to justice.

The CP vowed that he would was committed to ridding the expressway of crimes and criminality.
