An Elders Committee of the Nigerian Union of Journalists has sent a world of caution to members in Lagos State Council to ward off a brewing crisis in their ranks.

Towards an amicable resolution of issues, the elders committee in a statement signed Lanre Arogundade, former Chairman, Lagos NUJ and
Toro Oladapo, former President, NAWOJ, said a meeting had been summoned for them to interact with members of the state executive.

While the path of resolution is being taken, the state Congress slated for this Saturday July 4 has been rescheduled for July 11, 2020.

The state read in parts: “Our attention has been drawn to a brewing crisis in our dear Lagos State Council of the Nigerian Union of Journalists.

“We urge the different sides to the dispute to exercise restraint and refrain from any act of omission or commission that may bring the State Council and indeed the Union into disrepute.

“Pursuant to the need to ensure a peaceful atmosphere under which the matters at stake can be addressed and amicably resolved, we have invited the Chairman, the Vice Chairman, the Secretary and all other members of the State Executive to a crucial meeting on Saturday, July 4 at 12pm in the temporary Secretariat of the union at LTV/Radio Lagos premises.

“We have also appealed to them that the Congress planned for this Saturday, July 4, 2020, following an earlier rescheduling, be further postponed to July 11 to give room for the intervention of members of the committee.”

This was coming even as the state chairman, Dr. Qasim Akinreti, has hit back at the people filing allegations against his leadership of the council.

In a letter addressed to national president and copied to national secretary of the union, Akinreti gave detailed explanation of what he believes they did not state in their earlier letter to the national secretary and then asked where they got their information from.

He however assured the national Secretariat that although the allegations were in attempt to cause crisis in Lagos council but vowed they would not succeed.
