Eleven Zamfara delegates, who participated in the just concluded Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Delegates Conference in Owerri, Imo State capital, have been involved in a ghastly motor accident.
They, however, narrowly escaped death as all of them were said to have walked out of the crashed NUJ Bus by themselves although some of them sustained minor injuries.
The accident occurred on along the Abuja-Kaduna road on Friday, while they were on their way returning to base from Owerri.
The DEFENDER reports that the delegates had traveled to participate in the elections of NUJ national presidential and other executives held in the Imo State capital earlier in the week.
Announcing the incident, the Zamfara State Secretary of the NUJ, Malam Ibrahim Ahmed Gada, said the incident happened when the union bus, conveying the relegates back home, dodged an oncoming vehicle to avoid head-on collision along the express, where vehicles going and coming had to use one side of the dualised road being currently under construction.
The just re-elected NUJ Zonal Secretary (Zone A), Comrade Abdurrazak Bello Kaura, was among the eleven Zamfara NUJ delegates involved in the road crash.
According to Ahmed Gada, ”It was as a result of dodging the oncoming vehicle, that our bus jumped to the other lane and brushed and hit a long tanker vehicle where both front and driver sides of the NUJ bus got badly damaged”.
He further informed that all the delegates on board safely escaped death but that some of them sustained minor injuries.
He added that, ”We all walked out of the bus by ourselves.”
The Secretary noted that the damaged bus was towed down to Kaduna where it would be safely kept for refurbishing.
