No attack on state mosque, kidnap of 48 worshippers in Sokoto – Police
The Nigeria Police Force Sokoto State Command has refuted yet another ‘unpatriotic’ effort by some elements within the society exploiting the current security situation in, particularly, the North West to spread misleading reports to confuse the public about the ongoing anti-terrorism fight in the country.
The report said bandits broke into a “Sokoto State mosque”, during which it claimed 48 worshippers were kidnapped.
But in a statement by its State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), ASP Sanusi Abubakar, the police debunked the report, saying it was fake news.
In a statement referenced Ref/No: AZ/5250/SKS/PRD/VOL.III/196 dated 15/12/2021, issued by ASP Abubakar and copy of which was obtained by The DEFENDER, the police noted that the purported news, in circulation on social media, emanated from one weetalknaija.com and urged members of the public to disregard it.
“In view of the above, the Command is using this medium to debunk such fabricated story capable of misleading the general public and to create chaos into the minds of law abiding citizens of Sokoto State.
“It is pertinent to State that, members of the public should be wary against deception and lies concocted by unverified news websites and further replicated in many online publications.
“Sokoto State Police Command is very much aware of the prevalent security situation in the state, working tirelessly for a lasting solution in conjunction with other sister agencies.
“While reiterating our commitment in sustaining peace in the state, we call on members of the public to cooperate with security agencies in the fight against banditry and other crimes,” ASP Abubakar said.
