Newly elected lawmaker decries foreign allegations about HK’s LegCo election

Lawmaker-elect Dennis Leung Tsz-wing said on Tuesday the attempt by five Western countries to smear Sunday’s Hong Kong Legislative Council election was a futile attempt to cause chaos and interfere in the city’s affairs.

His remarks came after the release of a joint statement issued on Monday by the foreign ministers of Australia, Canada, New Zealand, and the United Kingdom, and the US secretary of state. The statement made allegations about the city’s first LegCo election under the revamped electoral system.

Leung, lawmaker-elect of the labor functional constituency, said the statement reveals the intention of external forces to interfere in China’s internal affairs, and to disrupt Hong Kong by smearing the new electoral system.

Noting the deficiencies of Western-style democracy that have been further exposed during the COVID-19 pandemic, Leung said the facts prove the success of China’s democracy as being a more-resilient form of democracy.

“The Western countries cannot solve their own problems, so they intend to hinder China’s development by interfering in the SAR’s affairs,” Leung said.

Their attempt also proves the success of the revamped electoral system, which helped the city break free from the shackles of Western-style democracy and leap forward to a democratic development that better suits Hong Kong’s interests, Leung said.

“With the nation as a strong backer, I believe Hong Kong will have a very bright future,” he said, pledging that all the 90 newly elected lawmakers will strive to improve Hong Kong people’s livelihood.
