Uganda’s long-time President Yoweri Museveni has been re-elected as electoral umpire declared final results of Thursday January 14, 2021 Presidential election in the country.

Mr Museveni won almost 59 percent of the vote, with Bobi Wine trailing with about 35 percent, the nation’s Electoral Commission said.

Thursday’s poll may turn out to be the “most cheating-free” in the history of the African nation, the president said.

Bobi Wine, a former pop star however, vowed to provide evidence of vote-rigging when internet connections were restored.

The government shut down the internet ahead of voting day in what it said was to prevent local and foreign elements who were bent on spreading fake news through the social media to manipulate the process.

The shutdown of the internet was condemned by election monitors, who said confidence in the count had been damaged by the days-long cut.

A government minister told the BBC on Saturday evening that the internet service would be restored “very soon”.

Yoweri Museveni succeeded Idi Amin some 35 years ago after he fled, having failed to install himself as life President of the black nation.

After his inauguration following his latest victory, Museveni will have succeeded in having a sixth term despite Nigeria’s President Muhammadu  Buhari’s counsel against African leaders perpetrating themselves in office as Presidents.
