INEC fixes date for 2019 Presidential, Governorship polls

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has fixed Saturday February 16 for the conduct of the 2019 Presidential Elections.
The Commission also said the Governorship/State Assembly/Federal Capital Territory Area Council Elections would hold on Saturday March 2, 2019.
National Commissioner in charge of South-West, Prince Solomon Soyebi briefed newsmen on the outcome of the Commission’s meeting on Thursday.
Reacting to the new timetable released by the INEC, both the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and the All Progressives Congress (APC) said they were not against the schedules.
Spokesman for the party, Mr. Bernard Mikko, reportedly said the Sheriff-led PDP was not against the timetable and the APC National Publicity Secretary, Malam Bolaji Abdullahi, said his party was prepared for the arrangement.
According to the PDP spokesman, “For us in the PDP, we believe that the timetable may have been in line with the provisions of the Electoral Act. This is a wakeup call for us in the PDP. We have to put our house in order and key into the timetable in order to win the presidential election. We are not against the timetable,” he said.
In his reaction, the APC National Publicity Secretary, Malam Bolaji Abdullahi, said the party was fully prepared for the 2019 general elections, following the release of the dates for the presidential and governorship polls.
Abdullahi said the release of the election timetable was a statutory, normal and routine duty of the electoral body.
