Their departure means that one-third of the lawmakers elected on the APC platform have now left the party, potentially weakening its influence in the state legislature ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The All Progressives Congress (APC) has suffered a major setback in Zamfara State, with eight members of the State House of Assembly announcing their defection from the ruling party.
The lawmakers made their decisions known during plenary in Gusau, the state capital, in a development that has altered the political configuration of the 24-member Assembly.
The affected lawmakers represent Mafara South, Maradun I, Bakura, Bukkuyum North, Gummi I, Bungudu North, Maru North and Kaura constituencies.
Their departure means that one-third of the lawmakers elected on the APC platform have now left the party, potentially weakening its influence in the state legislature ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Although the lawmakers did not immediately announce their next political destination, sources within the Assembly said they were likely to join the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
The development is particularly significant given Zamfara’s strategic position in the politics of the North-West and its history as a stronghold of the APC.
Zamfara was previously governed by Senator Abdul’aziz Abubakar Yari, who currently serves as Director-General of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Presidential Campaign Council.
The DEFENDER reports that the mass defection could signal a realignment of political forces in Zamfara ahead of the 2027 elections, with its possible implications extending beyond the State House of Assembly to the wider political contest in the state.
