ILARA KINGDOM: Youth protest described as ‘sacrilegious’ amid support for Oba Ogunsanwo’s developmental leadership

By KEMI KASUMU

“I am not resting on my oars,” Oba Ogunsanwo said. “We will continue to work together to ensure Ilara Kingdom remains on the path of progress and prosperity.”

The recent protest by a group of youths in Ilara Kingdom, Epe Division of Lagos State has sparked outrage and condemnation from community leaders and residents, who have described the incident as both sacrilegious and anti-development.

The demonstration, which took place on Wednesday, October 29, 2025, saw some suspectedly sponsored youths march through the streets, chanting slogans against Oba (Dr.) Olufolarin Olukayode Ogunsanwo, Telade IV, the Alara of Ilara Kingdom. The protesters accused the monarch of neglecting traditional and developmental matters due to his alleged absence from the town.

However, the majority of residents and stakeholders in Ilara have dismissed the allegations, insisting that Oba Ogunsanwo’s frequent travels are part of his efforts to attract development and forge partnerships for the progress of the community.

Community leaders described the protest as “a dark day” in the history of the ancient town, lamenting that a few misguided youths could be manipulated by “enemies of Ilara’s progress.”

Eyewitnesses said the protesters, waving leaves and chanting inflammatory songs, went as far as placing mariwo (fresh palm fronds) on the palace — an act traditionally reserved for the king and symbolic of condemnation, making it a taboo when performed by others.

Alleged sponsorship and envy

Investigations by local observers suggest that an unnamed envious traditional ruler may have sponsored the protest to discredit the Alara. Sources claim the motive stems from dissatisfaction over Oba Ogunsanwo’s prominent role as a Permanent Vice Chairman of the Lagos State Council of Chiefs and Chairman of the Epe Division Traditional Rulers Council, positions said to be statutory and unchallengeable.

“It would be a futile effort to attempt to remove the Alara or undermine his leadership through such acts,” one community elder said under strict condition of anonymity.

A Reign Marked by Development

Since his Coronation, Oba Olufolarin Ogunsanwo, who ascended the throne of his forebears five years ago, has been credited with several initiatives that have improved education, infrastructure, and community welfare. His leadership philosophy, known as AGAPE – Advancement Galvanized in an Atmosphere of Positive Engagement, focuses on unity and progress.

Highlighting his achievements during his fifth coronation anniversary earlier this year, the monarch has said during his fifth coronation anniversary recently that his reign had delivered significant milestones across education, health, and economic empowerment.

His key accomplishments include:
• Award of scholarships for indigent students locally and abroad.
• Construction of two blocks of six classrooms at Adesowon Secondary School.
• Facilitation of the Ilara Model Primary School in partnership with the Rotary Club of Lagos.
• Provision of school buses for pupil transportation.
• Upgrading of local schools in collaboration with political stakeholders.

Community members say these strides have positioned Ilara Kingdom as a model of grassroots development under Oba Ogunsanwo’s traditional leadership.

Reactions from Civic Leaders

In a statement titled “Vote of Confidence on Alara of Ilara Kingdom and Support for Our Royal Father,” the Epe Division People Assembly and Lagos Focus Foundation expressed solidarity with the monarch.

The statement, signed by Rt. Hon. Comrade Fagbodun Oluwadamilare, condemned the protest as the handiwork of “a few jobless, politically motivated youths” seeking to distract the king.

“Ilara remains united behind Oba Ogunsanwo, whose reign has brought peace, progress, and partnerships from across the Niger to the community,” the statement read.

Alara Addresses Allegations

According to palace sources, Oba Ogunsanwo dismissed claims of absenteeism and land mismanagement. He clarified that he has been actively engaging in traditional duties and community development efforts.

“I don’t know where they got that information from that I have been away for six months,” the monarch reportedly said as quoted by one of the palace sources. “I am always around, attending to traditional matters and the needs of my people.”

He also explained issues surrounding land allocation, particularly a parcel given to the Nigerian Navy for a community project.

The Alara, according to the source, said, “We allotted 10 acres for the Navy’s project at no cost because it would benefit the town. Unfortunately, some youths sold parts of the land without the palace’s consent.”

Oba Ogunsanwo reaffirmed his dedication to Ilara’s development, highlighting ongoing collaborations with the government of Lagos State to establish a general hospital in the area and strengthen traditional institutions.

Path of Reconciliation

In a move to restore peace, the Alara convened a meeting at his palace, inviting all aggrieved parties to express their concerns and seek reconciliation. The palace sources also confirmed that the monarch has chosen to forgive the erring youths, likening their actions to a “disagreement between a father and his children.”

“I am not resting on my oars,” Oba Ogunsanwo said. “We will continue to work together to ensure Ilara Kingdom remains on the path of progress and prosperity.”

As Ilara looks ahead, community stakeholders remain optimistic that the recent unrest will serve as a reminder of the need for unity and collective commitment to development.
