How Trump celebrated Iran’s reopening of Strait of Hormuz, thanked Tehran
Iran has, however, left a clause on the reopening saying the Strait remains under its full oversight.
United States President Donald Trump on Friday April 17, 2026 expressed appreciation to Iran following Tehran’s announcement that the Strait of Hormuz has been reopened for full commercial shipping, restoring transit through one of the world’s most strategically important maritime routes.
In a statement posted on his Truth Social platform, Trump said Iran had confirmed that the waterway was “fully open and ready for full passage,” adding, “Thank you.”
He reiterated the development in a follow-up post, describing the strait as “completely open and ready for business and full passage.”
Despite welcoming the reopening, Trump indicated that restrictions targeting Iran would remain in place. He stated that a naval blockade would continue to be enforced specifically against Iran until ongoing negotiations between the two sides are fully concluded.
According to Trump, discussions surrounding the arrangement are already at an advanced stage, with most key issues addressed. He expressed confidence that the remaining process would be completed swiftly.
The Strait of Hormuz is a vital global shipping corridor, particularly for energy supplies, and any disruption or reopening of the route typically has significant implications for international trade and oil markets.
