The transition reflects not only a change in leadership but also an affirmation of cultural practices that define the governance of the Ibadan kingdom.
Former Governor of Oyo State, Senator Rashidi Adewole Ladoja, has been designated as the next Olubadan of Ibadan Land following the passing of Oba Olakulehin, the 43rd Olubadan, who died on July 7, 2025, after a brief reign of just one year. Oba Olakulehin, born on July 5, 1935, ascended the throne July 12, 2024.

As the current Otun Olubadan, Chief Ladoja is positioned at the top of the succession hierarchy according to the traditional norms of the ancient Ibadan kingdom.
His rise is in line with the rotational kingship system that exists within the Ibadan traditional structure, which alternates the title of Olubadan between two main houses: 1. Otun Line (civil) and 2. Balogun Line (military).
The late Oba Olakulehin hailed from the Balogun line, meaning that the next Olubadan will emerge from the Otun line, which Chief Ladoja currently represents as the topmost I rank.
This adherence to tradition underscores the importance of historical protocols in the selection of the Olubadan, ensuring a seamless transition in leadership.
Born September 25, 1944, the seasoned politician and successful businessman, Ladoja, has previously served as a senator and is known for his commitment to public service and the welfare of his people.
His aspirations are centered around peace, development, and the well-being of the Ibadan community.
Ladoja is expected to be formally crowned as the new Olubadan after the burial rites of the late Oba Olakulehin.
This ritualistic aspect reflects the deep respect for customs and the significance of honoring the legacy of previous kings.
Senator Rashidi Ladoja’s elevation to the Olubadan throne marks a significant moment in the history of Ibadan Land, promising a continuation of tradition while highlighting his dedication to the people he once led as governor and now aims to lead as the most important monarch in Oyo State and one of many such many royal personalities Nigeria.
The transition reflects not only a change in leadership but also an affirmation of cultural practices that define the governance of the Ibadan kingdom.
