ECOWAS’ strength weakened by Nigeria’s President legitimacy issues, says South African Broadcasting Corporation

By KEMI KASUMU

Effectiveness of the Economic Community of West Africa States (ECOWAS) has decreased and its strength weakened.

One of the contributing factors is the legitimacy issues surrounding the February 25, 2023 election of Nigerian President Bola  Tinubu, who is currently serving as Chairman of the ECOWAS.

This was according to South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) in his his television presentation on Friday. Click here to watch: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2D3-9ZSn-Vk

It said this may have implications for the organisation’s ability to address regional issues and fulfill its objectives effectively.

One of the South African Broadcasting Corporation programme’s anchors (a lady) particularly pointed to the fact that the last election that produced the Nigerian president is still very much contested in court.

In a viral video on Tic Tok, two SABC reporters and programme anchors were seen discussing as one of the duo said that the Chairmanship of ECOWAS is weak because of the controversy surrounding Bola Tinubu presidency as a result of the election.

Meanwhile at home, opposition parties and the Independent National Electoral Commission (iNEC) are at the Presidential Election Petitulions Tribunal (PEPEC) contesting the results of the Nigeria’s presidential election.

Pressident Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s election as Nigeria’s president is llletimate and that is affecting ECOWAS patriotism towards Pan-Africanism goals, one pundit tell Naija247news.

It will be recalled that President Bola Tinubu in Abuja, on Wednesday, described the recent developments in the Republic of Niger as “unpleasant”, insisting that Nigeria will do all within its power to plant and nurture democracy in West Africa.
