President Muhammadu Buhari, during the just concluded week precisely Thursday April 7, 2022, commissioned 76 housing units, including internal roads and drainages, central borehole with overhead water tanks and electricity connection in Gama-Gwari, off Jaba Fanisau Road, Fagge Local Government Area of Kano State.

The estate comprises 48 units of 2-bedroom bungalow, 24 units of 3-bedroom bungalow and 4 units of 1 bedroom bungalow.

Minister of Works and Housing, Babatunde Raji Fashola, said the building contracts were awarded in November, 2016 at a total cost of N727.5 million.

He recalled that the infrastructure contracts were awarded in May 2017 at a total cost of N608.8 million. Road, drains and asphalt finishing cost N438.2 million, electricity supply and installation of 500kva transformers cost N82.2 million, while motorised borehole was done at N88.3 million.

Kano State Government, it was gathered, provided land for the project.

President Buhari, who was represented by the Minister of Defence, Maj. Gen. Bashir Salihi Magashi, said the housing estate is an example of the fulfillment of the promise of change which the All Progressives Congress (APC) made when it sought mandate from Nigerians to form government in 2015.

“This is a good example of some of the developmental possibilities that inter-governmental collaboration can produce and I am optimistic that with the provision of more land, the federal government certainly can do more.”

The president added that “The Micro, Small and Medium size business people who drive our economy were the ones who won the contracts to build these houses.

“Not only did their successful bids offer an opportunity for these companies and their employees, through them we have unleashed a value chain of economic activities that improved the conditions of ordinary Nigerians.”

“They engaged suppliers who benefit from sub-contracts for the supply of building materials from sand to cement, roofing and plumbing materials to doors and electrical fitting.

Fashola, who was represented by Arc. Solomon Labafilo, described the project as “harvest of the fruit of investment.”

“As we head towards the end of President Muhammadu Buhari’s tenure of office, I am happy to say we have entered a season of completion when many projects such as this begin to bear fruits.

“In 34 states of Nigeria, the Federal Government, through the Ministry of Works and Housing, has delivered projects like this with the support of the state governors who provided the land.

“In terms of design, this project is the outcome of a national survey conducted by the Ministry of Works and Housing to find out the type of houses Nigerians desired.”

He explained that the federal government has offered all the housing units to members of the general public in a “non-discriminatory way” by opening the National Housing Portal to ensure those interested are not inhibited by any artificial obstacle.

“Allocations will be made on the basis of those who apply and pay on a first come, first served basis,” he said.
