Biden praises Congressional midterms, ‘looking forward to the next couple of years’

US President Joe Biden said that he was pleased with how the country’s midterm elections were unfolding and was looking forward Georgia’s runoff election.

“I feel good, and I’m looking forward to the next couple of years,” Biden told reporters in Cambodia, commenting on the reports that Democratic senators would outnumber their Republican colleagues following runoff in Georgia. “It’s just simply better, the bigger the number the better,” he reiterated.

The American president noted the Democrats’ retention of control of the upper house of Congress was “a reflection of the quality of our [Democratic] candidates,” according to the CNN live broadcast.

On Saturday, NBC and a number of other leading US media outlets predicted that incumbent Democratic Senator Catherine Cortez Masto would win the midterm elections in Nevada. A Democratic victory in Nevada means they gain at least 50 seats in the Senate. This gives them control of the upper chamber, since there are 100 seats overall. In the event of a tie between the two parties, the vote of Vice President Kamala Harris, a Democrat, becomes decisive.

The fate of one more seat in the Senate will be decided in December, based on the results of the runoff election in Georgia. However, the results of that vote will now depend on whether Democrats strengthen their majority in the Senate, or whether the balance of power in the upper chamber remains unchanged. In the current Senate, the seats are evenly split between Democrats and Republicans.

The midterm elections in the US were held on November 8. Earlier, many experts did not rule out that the Republican Party could regain control of both houses of Congress. Which party will win a majority in the House of Representatives remains unknown, since the vote count has not yet been completed.
