Governor of Ekiti State, Dr. John Kàyode Fayemi, has signed an Executive Order barring principals of schools from taking education levies from pupils in public primary and secondary schools in the state.
The same order also compelled parents to release all children of school age to enjoy formal education.
Singing the order in Ado Ekiti Wednesday, Fayemi said no principal should collect any illegal fee from students.
He said the principals should adhere strictly to his directive prohibiting the payment of education tax by students.
The education levy of N1000 per term was introduced by the immediate past governor, Mr Ayodele Fayose.
Being part of the ways to boost efficiency in schools, the governor also approved a sum of N200 million as car and housing loans for Ekiti State teachers.
Fayemi said the money will be disbursed on or before 15th of November, 2018.
Fayemi also reiterated that his government will commence immediate payment of arrears of salaries, owed by the last administration.
“Education is the priority of this government. We are not going to compromise our standards, we must keep the flag flying.
” The only heritage we have in Ekiti is education, the only thriving industry and we have to do everything to protect it and make our people feel the benefits,” he said.
