What promises to be the first-of-its-kind event by the Yoruba Muslims, to address challenges facing them and their religion in a cosmopolitan society like the region, will happen in Ibadan, Oyo State capital, South West Nigeria, on Saturday, October 6, 2018.
The event tagged, “The International Conference” with the theme “Islam in Yoruba Land: Progress and Challenges”, is said to have been put together by the Sakariyau Olayiwola Babalola-led Muslim Ummah of South West Nigeria (MUSWEN) as part of activities lined up in marking its 10th year of creation.
The conference, hosted by the Executive Secretary/Chief Executive of MUSWEN, Professor Daud Noibi, will be chaired by the retired Judge of the World Court and former Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Judge Abdul-Jabbar Bola Ajibola, who incidentally is Chairman Board of Trustees of MUSWEN.
It promises also to be an avenue for the coming together of renowned scholars and “unputdownable” stakeholders versed in the knowledge capacity to discuss the history of Islam in Yoruba Land with a view to holistically identifying the progress made so far and the challenges faced by today Muslims in the region and then come up with workable solution plans towards the future.
The International conference has the former Osun State Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Matters, Professor Muhib Opeloye as its Chairman Conference Organising Committee working hand-in-hand with Alhaji Yisa Abdulkareem as Chairman 10th Anniversary Committee.
A statement by both leaders, Opeloye and Abdulkareem, indicates that the maiden conference will hold at the International Conference Centre, University of Ibadan, Ibadan, Oyo State, Nigeria starting from 10 o’clock in the morning of Saturday October 6, 2018.
Featuring at the maiden all-important conference are intellectual and scholarly presentations by erudite scholars such as the Chief Missioner of Ansar-Ud-Deen Society of Nigeria, Imam Abdurrahman Ahmad and President of Lagos State Muslim Community, Professor Tajudeen Gbadamosi.
The League of Imams and Alfas in the South West as well as prominent Muslim groups and scholars are equally expected at the one-day conference.
Muslim Ummah of Southwest Nigeria (MUSWEN) was established in August, 2008 with the aim of uniting the Muslims in the six states that make up the region and foster the development of the Ummah in the country.
MUSWEN, which has produced the Deputy President-General (South) of the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs(NSCIA) in Alhaji S.O. Babalola working with the Sultan of Sokoto and NSCIA President-General, prides itself as a unifying factor for the Muslims in the region and beyond and thus, the 10th year of its existence is described as decade of unity, peace and progress.
