US Sends USS George Washington to West Asia to Replace USS Abraham Lincoln
The deployment is reportedly part of a planned rotation rather than an emergency decision directly caused by the concerns surrounding the Lincoln. Nevertheless, the timing would allow the Lincoln and its crew to receive relief after months of continuous operations.
The United States is preparing to deploy the USS George Washington aircraft carrier to West Asia, where it is expected to replace the USS Abraham Lincoln as part of a major carrier rotation amid the ongoing conflict involving Iran.
The Wall Street Journal reported that the George Washington is being sent to relieve the Abraham Lincoln, which has been on an unusually prolonged deployment. The Lincoln has reportedly spent more than 250 days deployed and has gone about 200 days without a port call.
The move comes as concerns have grown over the condition and welfare of the Lincoln’s crew. US lawmakers and media reports have raised questions about sailors’ access to supplies, food, plumbing, water, mail and mental-health support during the extended deployment.
US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has disputed some of the reports, describing claims about deteriorating conditions aboard the carrier as misleading. However, officials have acknowledged the need to rotate the crew and eventually bring the ship home.
The USS George Washington, a Japan-based Nimitz-class aircraft carrier, is currently moving westward toward the Middle East. Reports indicate that the carrier strike group has been operating around the Strait of Malacca after leaving Vietnam, as it proceeds toward the Indian Ocean and ultimately the US Central Command area.

The Abraham Lincoln has played a major role in US military operations in the region since being redirected from the Indo-Pacific earlier this year as tensions with Iran escalated. USNI News previously reported that the carrier strike group entered the US Fifth Fleet area in January and operated in the Indian Ocean before moving into the Middle East.
The planned arrival of the George Washington would therefore represent both a routine carrier rotation and a significant relief for the Lincoln’s crew, while maintaining US naval airpower in West Asia.
