The DEFENDER reports that Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, by the latest decision by him, has laid a precedence as a non-selfish politician that takes the National Assembly not as a retirement haven but a centre of service to the nation.
Former Sokoto State Governor and serving Senator, Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, has announced a gradual withdrawal from active local politics as he endorsed Faruk Malami-Yabo as his preferred successor in the Senate, in what observers describe as a major political transition in Sokoto State.
Tambuwal made the announcement on Friday during a strategic stakeholders’ meeting held in Sokoto, which drew party loyalists, traditional leaders, youth groups, political associates and community representatives from across the state.
Speaking at the gathering, the former Speaker of the House of Representatives described Malami-Yabo as “a committed, capable and visionary leader” who possesses the competence, integrity and political experience required to sustain progressive leadership and democratic governance in Sokoto State.
According to Tambuwal, the endorsement reflects the need for continuity, political stability and deliberate investment in a new generation of leaders capable of advancing development and strengthening democratic institutions.
“Leadership is not about personal ambition alone; it is about continuity, service and preparing others to carry the torch,” Tambuwal said while addressing stakeholders.
The former governor explained that his decision to step back from frontline local political activities should not be interpreted as retirement from public service, noting that he intends to focus more on mentorship, policy engagement and initiatives aimed at empowering young Nigerians to participate actively in governance and leadership.
Tambuwal stressed that experienced politicians have a responsibility to create opportunities for emerging voices and fresh ideas within Nigeria’s political landscape, adding that sustainable leadership depends on succession planning and inclusiveness.
He further expressed confidence that Malami-Yabo would provide purposeful leadership capable of uniting people across political and social divides for the overall progress of the state.
Responding to the endorsement, Malami-Yabo thanked Tambuwal for the confidence reposed in him and described the former governor as “a political mentor, bridge-builder and symbol of selfless leadership.”
He pledged to uphold the values of accountability, inclusiveness and people-oriented governance, while promising to continue policies and initiatives that would promote development, unity and social welfare across Sokoto State.
Political analysts and observers have described the development as a significant moment in Sokoto politics, noting that Tambuwal’s decision signals a generational shift and a renewed emphasis on leadership succession, political mentorship and long-term stability within the state’s political structure.
The meeting ended with calls from stakeholders for sustained peace, cooperation and support for young leaders, with participants expressing optimism that the transition would strengthen democratic ideals and accelerate socio-economic development in Sokoto State and the wider North-West region.
