NIGERIA: Sultan urges Journalists to uphold truth, avoid social media misuse

The Sallah homage, a longstanding tradition, provided an opportunity for journalists and other stakeholders to engage with the Sultan, exchange goodwill, and reflect on their roles in fostering an informed and cohesive society.

The Sultan of Sokoto and Leader of the over half national population Muslims in Nigeria, His Eminence Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, has called on journalists across Nigeria to remain committed to truth, professionalism, and responsible reporting, cautioning against the misuse of social media platforms to spread misinformation.

The Sultan made the remarks on Sunday, March 22, 2026, while receiving members of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Sokoto State Council, who paid him the traditional Eid-el-Fitr (Sallah) homage at his palace in Sokoto.

Speaking during the visit, the monarch stressed the vital role of the media in shaping public opinion and fostering national unity, particularly in an age where information spreads rapidly through digital platforms.

“Social media is a powerful tool, but it can also be dangerous if not used responsibly,” he said. “As journalists, you must not allow it to become a channel for spreading falsehood or causing disunity. Your duty is to report the truth at all times.”

He noted that the rise of instant news and user-generated content has increased the need for professional journalists to distinguish themselves as reliable sources of verified information.

“People depend on you for accurate and balanced reports. If you neglect that responsibility, society will bear the consequences,” the Sultan added. “Always verify your facts before publication and consider the impact of your reports on peace and stability.”

The Sultan further urged media practitioners to prioritize national interest and uphold ethical standards, warning against sensationalism and emphasizing that responsible journalism remains essential to democracy and good governance.

Earlier, the NUJ Chairman in Sokoto State, Mohammed Usman Binji, commended the Sultan for his consistent advocacy for peace, unity, and responsible leadership, particularly in Northern Nigeria.

He assured that members of the union would continue to uphold professional ethics and support initiatives that promote national development.

The Sallah homage, a longstanding tradition, provided an opportunity for journalists and other stakeholders to engage with the Sultan, exchange goodwill, and reflect on their roles in fostering an informed and cohesive society.
