The passing of the Awujale of Ijebu Land, Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona, is a profound loss that will leave a significant vacuum in the ancient kingdom for years to come.
This sentiment was expressed in a heartfelt condolence message from Chief Akin Ricketts, National Chairman of the All Democratic Alliance (ADA), an opposition coalition party currently awaiting registration by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Nigeria.
The message, issued and signed by Essien Emmanuel of his Media Office, and was dated Tuesday, July 15, 2025 and circulated to the media.
“In his remarkable reign, Oba Adetona showcased how the roles of traditional leadership and religious service could harmoniously coexist, reinforcing the values of our culture while committing to the service of humanity,” said Chief Ricketts.
He emphasized, “Ascending to the throne in his 20s, Oba Adetona will be remembered as one of the longest-serving traditional rulers in Yoruba history. His legacy of effective leadership will endure, not only among the people of Ijebu Land but also among those who value culture and faith.”
Chief Ricketts concluded by expressing gratitude for the late monarch’s contributions to the nation and the Yoruba race, stating that, “We will forever cherish your memory, dear king, for your exceptional leadership and unwavering commitment to the development of our nation and the sanctity of the Yoruba tradition.
“Our condolences go to the government of Ogun State, the family of the late monarch, members of the Awujale-in-Council and the entire people of Ijebu Land, as we pray that Allah forgives him of his shortcomings and admit the soul of Oba Sikiru Adetona in Al-Jannah Firdaus, Amiin,” Ricketts prayed.
