The impeached Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mr. Mudashiru Ajaiyi Obasa, has criticized the process through which lawmakers removed him from office.

He made this criticism while also calling for adherence to constitutional procedures.

Speaking publicly about his impeachment for the first time, Obasa, who was earlier reportedly said to be returning to the country weekend, expressed confidence that he remains the Speaker until proper protocols are followed.

He also refuted allegations of corruption leveled against him during the impeachment, describing the claims as baseless and unrealistic.

Addressing supporters at the Speaker’s Lodge, in GRA, Ikeja, Lagos on Saturday January 25, 2025, Obasa said that, “I firmly believe I am still the Speaker until due process is observed. If lawmakers want to remove me, they must do it the right way, and I will not challenge it. As a Muslim, I believe in fate, but we must respect procedures.”

When asked about the possibility of legal action, Obasa hinted at upcoming developments, saying, “You will know in due time.”

He also dismissed allegations of financial impropriety, questioning the feasibility of some claims.

According to him, “How can anyone suggest that a gate was constructed for N16 billion? It’s not the Wall of Jericho or the wall between the U.S. and Mexico. Similarly, the claim that we bought 40 Hilux vehicles at N1 billion each is laughable. I have nothing to hide and will address all accusations made by the House,” he said.

Obasa, who has served as a lawmaker for over 20 years and is the longest-serving member of the Assembly, insisted on his integrity and track record. “I have not done anything wrong. My people have elected me six times, and I continue to represent their interests,” he added.

The former Speaker also accused the Lagos State Commissioner of Police of orchestrating a security siege during his removal. He alleged that police officers invaded the State Assembly on the day of his impeachment, and over 200 officers surrounded his private residence in Agege, blocking the gate and restricting his family’s movement.

“I am not afraid of being removed. After all, this is not a hereditary title. However, if anything is to be done, it must be done properly. Lagos is a unique state, and we must not allow its reputation to be tarnished,” Obasa concluded.
