The Ogun State Police Command has continued its crackdown on criminals in the Gateway State as it descends on a 20-year-old woman, now in its custody for allegedly kidnapping a seven-year-old girl.
The state Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Abimbola Oyeyemi, disclosed the arrest in a statement he issued in Abeokuta, copy of which was sent to The DEFENDER, on Wednesday.
According to the stayement, the woman, Ajoke Owolabi, was said to have kidnapped Rachel Olorunshola early last year, while the victim was returning from school.
The incident threw Igbore community in Abeokuta South Local Government Area of Ogun State into pandemonium as manhunt was launched to join the parents in serious search.
Little Rachael was however suddenly brought home by a good Samaritan early August this year.
Luck ran against the abductor on August 29, this year when the girl was playing in front of her parents’ house at Igbore same time the suspect was passing by and Rachael raised alarm, pointing at the woman as the person who abducted her.
The suspect was promptly rounded up and arrested by a mob who threatened to burn her.
Though she initially denied knowing Rachael, she however relaxed and confessed when Rachael called her by her name Ajoke.
Ajoke was seized and searched by the onlookers who discovered her names boldly tattooed on her body.
The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Oyeyemi Abimbola, an Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) said in the statement he issued to the press on the matter that the little girl was taken to Oshodi in Lagos where she was kept for 19 months.
According to the statement, Ajoke came to attend a party in Abeokuta and kept the girl in a room from where she escaped.
“She passed through the girl’s parent’s house unknown to her that the girl was there on that fateful day,” he confirmed.
Meanwhile, Oyeyemi said the Commissioner of Police (CP) Ahmed Iliyasu has ordered the immediate transfer of the suspect to Anti Kidnapping/Cultist Unit of the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department for further investigation and possible prosecution.
