United Nations pays tribute to Buhari, late ex-President of Nigeria

The United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres, on Friday July 18, 2025, paid a condolence visit to the Nigerian House in the New York, during which he paid tribute to late former President Muhammadu Buhari.
During the visit, Guterres personally conveyed the UN’s solidarity with the government and people of Nigeria over the death of its immediate past president.
He described Buhari as a leader, whose unwavering dedication to Nigeria, Africa and global cooperation will stand as his enduring legacy.
The DEFENDER reports that the UN had earlier in a press release with reference number SG/SM/22728 dated 14 July 2025 a day after the demise, expressed it’s sadness over the Buhari’s passing.
With a title, “Saddened by Passing of Muhammadu Buhari, Secretary-General Praises Former Nigerian President’s Key Role Promoting Regional Peace, Security in West Africa”, issued by his Spokesman, António Guterres, the UN praised the virtues of Buhari.
“The Secretary-General is deeply saddened to learn of the passing of the former President of Nigeria, Muhammadu Buhari.
“During his tenure, President Buhari demonstrated a deep commitment to the sovereignty, stability and development of his country. He also played a key role in promoting regional peace and security in West Africa and the Lake Chad Basin. He was also a strong advocate for multilateral and regional cooperation.
“The Secretary-General extends his heartfelt condolences to his family, the Government, and the people of Nigeria during this time of national mourning,” the statement published on the UN’s website link: https://press.un.org/en/2025/sgsm22728.doc.htm said.
