The DEFENDER becomes ‘Member Society of Digital Newspaper Owners of Nigeria’

Nigeria-based global and multilingual online newspaper, The DEFENDER, has been fully enlisted as Member of the Society of Digital Newspaper Owners of Nigeria (SDNON).

The SDNON membership screening committee communicated the approval to the management of Defender Media Limited, publishers of The DEFENDER Newspaper, in Abuja on Thursday January 2, 2025.

The DEFENDER, established in 2002 as a print newspaper registered with the National Library of Nigeria (NLN), became online newspaper in Africa’s most populous country in June 2016.

It has contributed to national peace, unity and development through reliable and unassailable investigated reports providing journalism based support, voluntarily, to the armed forces, security agencies on anti-humanity crimes and offences as well as terrorism fighting and has played roles in programme for the peaceful coexistence among people of different backgrounds in Nigeria.

With an Advisory Board that is made up of two Retired Assistant Inspectors-General of the Nigerian Police Force, one of who is President, one Retired Major General of the Nigerian Army, one professor of law and senior advocate of Nigeria, a former Director General of the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA) and and human resources development expert, The DEFENDER is one of the products of Defender Media Limited, a company that for many years now has dealt in media and publicity consultancy, image laundering business and damage control as part of focus with an office in Abuja, the nation’s capital.

To be a member of the Society of Digital Newspaper Owners of Nigeria, the online newspaper must have a media company that is duly registered with the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC), have a website link, must have been running the website for at least three years, have an office address and then pay registration fee of N20,000.

“Having met the membership requirements for becoming a member of the Society of Digital Newspaper Owners of Nigeria (SDNON), I am delighted to announce to you that your organisation, The DEFENDER Newspaper online has been approved as a member of the Society. Accept my congratulations!” Chairman of the Society’s screening committee said.

The Society

Society of Digital Newspaper Owners of Nigeria, (SDNON) is a network of seasoned journalists drawn from across newsrooms, who are also publishers of online newspapers and magazines.

It is a rallying point for like minds and progressives, in the New Media space, who are excellence driven, and poised with clear-cut drive to make a mark in contemporary journalism, using modern tools of the profession.

The association is strategically positioned to serve as a nexus between the media and practitioners and various sectors of the society.

The society in collaboration with other journalistic bodies across the world, work to preserve the traditions and standards of journalism practice and strict adherence to the Code of Ethics of the profession in Nigeria.
