In conclusion, we appeal for cohesion among Northern leaders and charge them to utilize the various mechanisms available in the region to resolve issues without externalizing them because every little incident in the North has far-reaching impact on Islamdom in Nigeria,” Ishaq Akintola said in the MURIC’s statement.
The suspension of probe by Kano State House of Assembly of the Emir of Kano, Alhaji Muhammadu Sanusi II, has commendation by the nation’s most vocal Muslim group, the Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC).
The Kano State House of Assembly had on Monday suspended its probe of the Emir sighting a unanimous resolve by the House members in attendance to drop the probe after the state governor, Abdullahi Ganduje, pleaded for truce through a letter read by the speaker, Kabiru Alhassan Rirum, on the floor of the House.
The governor, however, listed in the letter a number of prominent Nigerians who intervened on behalf of the embattled ancient city’s Emir which include the Acting President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar III, Africa’s richest man, Alhaji Aliko Dangote, former Military President Ibrahim Babangida and former Head of State General Abdulsalami Abubakar among others.
In a statement, on Tuesday morning, Director of Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC), Prof. Ishaq Akintola, applauded the peaceful resolution of the crisis between the Muhammadu Sanusi-led Kano Emirate and the Government of Kano State, which led to the suspension of the probe by the legislative arm.
“The Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) commends Governor Ganduje for demonstrating statesmanship. We also give kudos to the Speaker and the honourable members of the state’s House of Assembly for manifesting political maturity and high level of discipline,” he said.
The Muslim rights group sighted the place of Kano City as the economic hub of the North whose growth should be promoted at all times. It therefore appealed to the State Governor, the lawmakers, the Emir and Islamic scholars in the state to always find in-house solutions to issues in the interest of peace, law and order.
MURIC expressed delight in the peaceful resolution of the crisis, even as it acknowledged the outstanding contributions of the Emir of Kano to the introduction of the Islamic banking system in Nigeria, his immense exposure to the Shari’ah legal system and his passion for the advancement of Islam.
The Ishaq Akintola-led MURIC nonetheless called on Emir Muhammadu Sanusi II to always carry Kano State authorities and Islamic scholars in the state and other parts of Northern Nigeria along in his deliberations.
