Russia will expand the use of the practice of confiscation according to its legislation and will undertake comparable measures with regards to the property of foreign residents if Western countries confiscate the property belonging to Russians, Chairman of the Russian Federation Council Committee on Constitutional Legislation and State Building Andrey Klishas said.

“In case if ‘law-governed’ and ‘democratic’ Western states begin to confiscate the property of Russian private individuals and legal entities, we will undertake comparable measures and expand the use of the confiscation practice according to Russian legislation. Such actions by the West won’t remain without retaliatory measures,” the senator wrote on his Telegram channel.

Earlier, US Attorney General Merrick Garland said that the US administration intended to address the US Congress asking to expand its authority in the confiscation of assets. He confirmed that the Department of Justice would support a bill allowing the US authorities to transfer to Kiev some of the assets confiscated over anti-Russian sanctions.

In mid-April, US National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan specified that the American government did not intend to return the arrested assets to major Russian entrepreneurs.

On February 24, Russian President Vladimir Putin said in a televised address that in response to a request by the heads of the Donbass republics he had made a decision to carry out a special military operation in order to protect people “who have been suffering from abuse and genocide by the Kiev regime for eight years.”

The Russian leader stressed that Moscow had no plans of occupying Ukrainian territories. Following this, the US, the EU, the UK and a number of other countries announced the introduction of sanctions against Russian legal entities and private individuals. TASS
