Passengers and other users of airport from the Oshodi-Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) Road axis in Lagos have been urged to show understanding over the ongoing reconstruction of the vital road.
This appeal came from the Federal Airport Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) in a statement by its General Manager, Communications Affairs, Mrs Henrietta Yakubu, on Thursday in Lagos.
Mrs Yakubu said that security agencies and other traffic officers had been mobilised to ensure that road users and passengers had relatively hitch-free passage while the road was under construction.
She said, “FAAN, in conjunction with the Lagos State Government, has put in place necessary measures to mitigate the effect of the construction on the road users while the project last.”
The Oshodi-Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) Road is currently being reconstructed to a befitting standard by Lagos State Government based on an understanding between the state and the Federal Government that money spent on the reconstruction will be refunded in due time.
The FAAN spokesperson said that the project, which would last for 15 months, was aimed at expanding the road for better service to users.
She urged passengers and other airport users plying the road to always leave their homes earlier than usual to enable them to get to the airport on schedule.
According to her, the design of the project includes the reconstruction and expansion of the existing carriage to a three-lane expressway on both directions, construction of two-lane service road in both directions.
“It also includes construction of Ramp Bridge to provide a U-turn from Ajao Estate to Airport, construction of a flyover at the Nigerian Aviation Handling Company (NAHCO)/Toll Gate and drainage works.
“The projects also include the removal of existing pedestrian bridge at Ajao Estate and construction of new pedestrian bridges at the estate.
“Others are construction of a new bridge at the NAHCO/Hajj Camp, construction of Slip Road to provide access to Ajao Estate, construction of Lay-bys and installation of street lights, among others,” she said.
Yakubu said that FAAN was committed to its core values of safety, security and comfort to the airport users.
Governor Akinwunmi Ambode of Lagos State had on Aug. 2 said that work on the proposed expansion and reconstruction of the road would commence in September.
Ambode said that the project would see the transformation of the road from four to 10 lanes from Oshodi to the International Airport with interchange and flyover that would drop commuters at the local airport.
