“The belief of most Northerners is that Tinubu, having weaponised poverty for political reason, is also using appointment into political offices as tool for winning re-election and so the people are unconcerned,” one of the respondents who reacted to our reporter in Abuja said.
Reports reaching The DEFENDER from core Northern Nigerian states of Nigeria have been described as scary by pro-Bola Tinubu’s supporters, who say mass defection across the region particularly lately in Katsina State make 2027 unsure for him.

This global online newspaper can authoritatively report that members of the All Progressives Congress (APC), the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), and the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) in Katsina State, the home state of late former President Muhammadu Buhari, have dumped their parties for the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
According to our impeccable sources the North West, the development, which took place on Sunday, July 13, 2025 during the unveiling of the ADC, Katsina State Chapter, after which for President Buhari later passed on in a London, also witnessed the distribution of party membership cards to new entrants drawn from the 34 Local Government Areas of the state.
Alhaji Mustapha Inuwa, a prominent politician and a leader of the Coalition, who led the defection, noted that the move marked a major blow on the ruling APC and other established parties in the region.
Also speaking, Alhaji Lawal Batagarawa, who is the National Representative of the National Political Coalition Group in Katsina State, condemned the state of the nation under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, stressing that the rising wave of insecurity, poverty, inflation, and the collapsed value of the Naira are unacceptable and can no longer be tolerated.
According to Batagarawa, “A lot of industries have shut down since Tinubu assumed office in 2023. This country deserves better.
“We call on young voters and the people of Katsina to rally behind the ADC so that we can deliver true dividends of democracy which has eluded them since May 29, 2023”.
Batagarawa called for unity among ADC members and supporters, assuring that the party will tackle the country’s challenges that include; terrorism, banditry, poverty, and illiteracy, if elected in 2027.
Speaking in turn, the State Chairman of ADC, Alhaji Usman Musa Wamba, expressed optimism about the party’s future, saying that unlike the “deceitful APC”, the ADC will do well and work for the interest of the people and not political office holders.
Among key political figures that defected included; Alhaji Aliyu Saulawa, a former APC stalwart who once served as Director of Media for the Buhari Campaign Organisation and National Coordinator of the Bola Ahmed Tinubu Movement. Saulawa pointedly accused the APC of deceit and refusal to keep to promises made to the people during the campaigns.
He said, “The APC has failed woefully in fulfilling its campaign promises especially in the North. The party has achieved less than one percent of what it promised. Without security, there is no livelihood.
“Our people are mainly farmers and traders, and without safety, everything collapses including our already fragile education system. I can no longer continue in the APC,” he stressed.
In the meantime, investigated reports from our reporters in the parts of the country confirmed that not only in Katsina but also in the entire Northern Nigeria that tsunami of defections has hit the APC and others as the people continued to switch and pledge their allegiance to the opposition coalition’s ADC.
Our Reporter in Katsina, while confirming the mood of politics in the state on Saturday July 19, 2025, said, “The truth is that very many members of the APC, PDP and NNPP said they have made up their minds to leave those parties and join the ADC. This gets worst now that Buhari has died.”
He said, “From the look of things, the death of Buhari is redefining the political landscape of Nigeria especially here in the North. The information available to us does not show any indication that the mass defection here in Katsina will sweep the governor, who wept profusely for losing his ‘father’ Buhari, outside of the APC.”
In Abuja, our reporter was told how “even Tinubu’s appointing Buhari’s son as petroleum minister, so to say, not just appointing a son of General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida can save his presidential ambition in 2027.
“The belief of most Northerners is that Tinubu, having weaponised poverty for political reason, is also using appointment into political offices as tool for winning re-election and so the people are unconcerned,” one of the respondents who reacted to our reporter in Abuja said.
Another impeccable sources in Katsina, who sent a whatsApp response to The DEFENDER thus weekend, also confirmed the the mass defection hitting the state is true.
“It’s true. I spoke with the NNPP Chairman of the state who said the man that Defected from their party is on his own, with some of his followers. But that their party hasn’t moved to the ADC officially. They are still in their NNPP.
He confirmed that ADC is a serious threat to APC,” he said.
However, report from Zamfara State revealed that the governor, Alhaji Dauda Lawal, is not clearly on his way to the All Progressives Congress (APC) as he reportedly continued to deny every nursing such idea.
“Here in Zamfara, the governor has continued to deny the rumour of him going to join the APC to help Tinubu win re-election in 2027. It has been the talk of the town that he was going to APC and, I think, that had to do with his body language from his too much romance with Matawalle, his predecessor, recently.
“As for whether Ahmed Sani Yarima Bakura continues to dictate the tune for political direction in the state like before, I can assure you that it is no longer so because people are now waiting to see the end result of the defection waves that are pervading the state and Nigeria correctly. But, generally, ADC is the slogan on the lips of an average Northerner currently.” he relayed.
