The Ogun State Police Command has announced its arrest of two men said to be specialised in car snatching across the state.
The two men, named Damilola Omolegbe and Saidi Asirikoko, were arrested at Oko Ape area of Igbogila in the state on Friday.
Details of the arrest were conveyed to the press in a statement issued on Sunday, copy of which was sent to The DEFENDER, by the Ogun State Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Abimbola Oyeyemi.
In the statement, Oyeyemi said, “One of the suspects, Damilola Omolegbe contacted one Abimbola Olaore, a driver of Toyota Camry with registration number KJA 164 EX in order to hire his vehicle from Alimoso in Lagos to Igbogila on an agreed fee. On getting to Oko Ape area, he asked the driver to stop for him to ease himself only for two other men to emerge from the bush with dangerous weapons and tied him with rope after beating him severely and dispossessed him of his car.
“Unfortunately for the suspects, while escaping with the car, they ran into a ditch and the vehicle was unable to move further. They jumped down and ran into a nearby bush,” the state’s Police spokesman said in the statement, which further explained that “distress call was made to the police, consequence of which the Area Commander Ilaro, ACP Titus Musa detailed police patrol team to the scene.”
It was as a result of thorough search by the operatives dispatched to the scene by the Ilaro Area Commander, in collaboration with members of the community that, according to Oyeyemi, led to the eventual arrest of the two suspects, while the remaining one escaped.
In the meantime, the car has been recovered to the station even as the Ogun State Commissioner of Police, Alhaji Ahmed iliyasu, has ordered the immediate transfer of the suspects to FSARS for discreet investigation.
