Obasanjo visits Kwankwaso in Kano amid speculation over 2027 alliance
Obasanjo was received by Kwankwaso alongside the NDC governorship candidate in Kano State, Comrade Aminu Abdulsalam Gwarzo.
Former President Olusegun Obasanjo on Thursday paid a courtesy visit to the Vice-Presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, at his residence in Kano.
Obasanjo was received by Kwankwaso alongside the NDC governorship candidate in Kano State, Comrade Aminu Abdulsalam Gwarzo.
Confirming the visit in a statement, Kwankwaso’s media aide, Saifullahi Hassan, described the meeting as an opportunity for warm exchanges between the two political leaders. He, however, did not disclose details of their discussions.
Obasanjo and Kwankwaso have maintained a longstanding political relationship. Kwankwaso served as Nigeria’s Minister of Defence during Obasanjo’s second term in office from 2003 to 2007.
The meeting comes amid growing political interest ahead of the 2027 general elections. The NDC presidential candidate, Peter Obi, is widely regarded as a close political associate of the former president. Obasanjo publicly endorsed Obi during the 2023 presidential election.
There have also been reports suggesting that Obasanjo played a key role in facilitating an alliance between Obi and Kwankwaso ahead of the 2027 polls. However, neither Obasanjo nor Kwankwaso addressed the speculation during Thursday’s meeting.
