In a press statement titled “THE KANO SHAME: A DESPERATE VENDETTA AGAINST THE PEOPLE’S MANDATE” and issued on Thursday, March 5th, 2026 in Abuja, NNPP National Publicity Secretary Bamofin Ladipo Johnson, alleged that the impeachment move was a “desperate vendetta against the people’s mandate” and accused lawmakers of attempting to pave the way for the (APC) to take control of the state government.
Johnson said the deputy governor was being targeted because he refused to defect to the ruling party along with some political figures who have left the NNPP. According to him, Gwarzo’s decision to remain loyal to the party and to the voters who supported it in the 2023 elections had made him a political target.
He described the impeachment proceedings as an “orchestrated charade,” claiming they were designed to overturn the outcome of the 2023 vote in Kano through legislative means after failing to do so through elections or the courts.
The NNPP reiterated its support for Gwarzo and urged residents of Kano State to remain calm despite what it called a major provocation. Johnson argued that the legislative action represented an attempt to undermine the democratic choice of the electorate.
He also warned that voters would hold accountable any lawmakers involved in the process during the next general elections in 2027.
The party said it remained committed to defending what it described as the mandate freely given to it by the people of Kano State in the 2023 polls.
The statement said that “when men trade their conscience for political patronage, they view loyalty to the people as a crime. The Deputy Governor is being persecuted for a singular “offense”: his refusal to join the bandwagon of those who have betrayed the sacred mandate given by the people of Kano to the NNPP. He has chosen the path of honour, staying true to Kano voters and the party, while others have fled to the ruling party in a shameful display of political opportunism.”
Johnson said, “This orchestrated charade just beginning in the House is a classic symptom of the atavistic and cannibalistic democracy these actors have embraced—a system where the law is weaponized to devour the very people it should protect. THEY ARE NOT HUNTING A MAN; THEY ARE HUNTING THE MANDATE OF THE PEOPLE OF KANO! We see this so called impeachment process for what it is, Johnson said, “it is a transparent attempt to pave the way for the complete APC TAKEOVER OF A MANDATE THEY COULD NOT WIN AT THE POLLS OR THROUGH THE COURTS. It is a political execution disguised as a constitutional process.
“The NNPP wishes to use this medium to register our unflinching support to the Deputy Governor, Comrade Aminu Abdulsalaam Gwarzo and the people of Kano State who freely gave their mandate to NNPP in 2023 for a period of 4 years, but which has now been transfered to a political party they outrightly rejected. However, we appeal to the good people of Kano State to remain calm even in the face of this humongous provocation.
“You cannot impeach the truth, and you cannot serve a notice of ‘gross misconduct’ on the collective will of the masses,” Ladipo Johnson stated. “This legislative rascality is nothing more than a crude attempt to finalize the subversion of the ballot through the backdoor.”
He said, Let it be known: 2027 is closer than it appears. The voters have long memories. Every legislator currently trading their integrity for political crumbs, and of course their paymasters, will meet the wrath of the masses at the ballot box. The gavel is yours today, but the people hold the ultimate power.
“The NNPP stands firm. We remain undeterred,” he said.
