NIGERIA: Zamfara Gov boosts agriculture with massive fertilizer distribution

Governor of Zamfara State, North West Nigeria, Alhaji Dauda Lawal, has reaffirmed the importance of agriculture in the state’s economy, describing it as the “lifeblood” of Zamfara.
Governor Lawal stated this while flagging off the distribution of 2025 farm inputs for the wet season, which include 59,205 bags of fertilizers valued for its potential to significantly improve food production in the region.
The distribution ceremony, held at the Ministry of Agriculture in Gusau, saw the governor commission the new Fadama house.
According to the governor’s spokesperson, Sulaiman Bala Idris, 98 fertilizer trucks were dispatched for onward distribution to farmers across the state’s 14 Local Government Areas.
Other farm inputs distributed included 34,800 kg of rice seeds, 80,000 kg of maize seeds, 23,740 liters of herbicides, 11,735 liters of insecticides and 23,470 sachets of seed dressing chemicals
The governor emphasized that his administration is committed to transforming Zamfara State through sustainable agriculture and rural development.
He highlighted the importance of supporting farmers, who account for over 85% of the state’s population, and noted that agriculture is crucial for food security, job creation, poverty reduction, and inclusive economic growth.
According to him, key highlights of the distribution are the 59,205 benefiting smallholder farmers across the state with the objective to increase agricultural productivity and improve food security.
The approach is also said to implement an agricultural transformation plan tailored to the state’s needs and aligned with Sustainable Development Goal 2.
Governor Lawal urged the beneficiaries to use the inputs wisely and responsibly, emphasizing that they are tools for productivity and investments in the future of Zamfara State.
This initiative is part of the state’s broader agricultural policy aimed at boosting food security and enhancing agricultural production.
