NIGERIA: DSS confirms, clarifies arrest of Tukur Mamu, says in custody

By SUMAYYAH ADEFAKA

The Department of State Services (DSS) in Nigeria reacted to news report earlier on Wednesday about the arrest in Egypt of Publisher of Kaduna-based Daily Herald Newspaper, Malam Tukur Mamu..

The DSS, in a statement by its Public Relations Officer, Dr. Peter Afunaya, copy of which was sent to The DEFENDER, said it had been inundated with enquires in respect of the arrest of Tukur Mamu, “the self-acclaimed Kaduna Train hostage negotiator” and made clarifications as to why.

News of Mamu’s arrest was earlier broken to the press by the publisher himself, who said his pick up at the Egypt airport in Cairo was at the instance of Nigerian authorities and that he was sure the DSS was waiting for him at the Kano airport.

The arrest, he said, occured while on his way to Madinah, Saudi Arabia and expressed confidence that he has nothing to hide.

Without waste of time, the DSS in Nigeria confirmed his arrest and that he has been taken into custody.

“This is to confirm that Mamu, as a person of interest, was intercepted by Nigeria’s foreign partners at Cairo, Egypt on 6th September, 2022 while on his way to Saudi Arabia. He has since been returned to the country, today, 7th September, 2022 and taken into the Service’s custody.”

Clarifying, the secret service said, “The act followed a request by Nigeria’s Military, Law Enforcement and Intelligence Community to their foreign partners to bring back Mamu to the country to answer critical questions on ongoing investigations relating to some security matters in parts of the country.

“The public may wish to note that the law will appropriately take its course,” DSS said in the statement of Peter Afunanya, Ph.D, fsi, dated 7th September 2022.

In some of the editorial comments of The DEFENDER in the past, Nigerians, who had the habit of working anti-clockwise to the progress of country, had been warned as the hand of the government of the day is long enough to pick any such citizen from anywhere in the world.
