NEW NAIRA NOTES: President Buhari presides on Council of State meeting

President Muhammmadu Buhari, on Friday, chaired the National Council of State meeting to address the current controversies surrounding the naira redesign and the currency swap policy in the country.

In attendance are the former Presidents and Heads of State, General Yakubu Gowon, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, General Abdulsalaam Abubakar and Dr. Goodluck Jonathan. Obasanjo attended virtually.

Also present at the meeting, held in the Council Chamber of State House, was the Vice President, Professor Yemi Osinbajo (SAN), President of the Senate, Senator Ahmed Lawan and Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila.

The DEFENDER reports that Governors in attendance included Mallam Nasir El-Rufai (Kaduna), Mr. Darius Ishaku (Taraba), Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu (Lagos), and Professor Babagana Zulum (Borno).  Other governors that are virtually in attendance are Senator Ademola Adeleke (Osun), Alhaji Abubakar Badaru (Jigawa), Mr. Yahaya Bello (Kogi), Senator Atiku Bagudu (Kebbi), Prince Dapo Abiodun (Ogun), Rt. Hon. Aminu Waziri Tambuwal (Sokoto), Sir Simon Bako Lalong (Plateau) and the Deputy Governors of Nasarawa and Bauchi states.

Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Alhaji Mohammed Bello, Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Mr. Boss Mustapha, Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Mallam Abubakar Malami (SAN) and the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Mr. Godwin Emefiele also attended the meeting.

The INEC Chairman, Mahmood Yakubu was also physically in attendance and is expected to brief the council on the preparations ahead of the 2023 elections.

All the Service Chiefs and Heads of security agencies were also physically present.
